You should be familiar with the term - standard operating procedure. Horses dying at the stamped isn't exactly a rare event. It's to be expected.

50 horses in the races have been killed in the past 26 years.
Ie 2 per year. They're running a bit above average this year.

"They're just like humans, they're our family," he said. "It's just devastating for our whole family. It's hard to take."
Guess it can't be helped. Just one of those things.

"We love those horses," he said, his voice breaking with emotion. "The outriding horse is an 18-year-old horse, I've had him for 13 years. He's part of our family, he's supposed to be my kid's horse."

Well why did he send the horse to the Calgary Stampede?

Injured horse put down after Calgary Stampede race (2011) R.I.P.

    4th Calgary Stampede horse dies (2010) R.I.P. X 4

    4th animal dies at Stampede (2009) R.I.P. X 4

SOP it is in the greatest city in Canada.

I hate to break it to you, but that burger you had a little while ago was made because an animal died. Many of these horses are loved by their owners, being well fed, looked after, and often considered a part of the family. The only real differences between a horse that died in the stampede and the cow that ended up in a slaughterhouse is that the horse had a name and doesn't end up on your dinner plate.

Difference is, cows are killed in the most humane way possible and used for human consumption.

These horses are used strictly for entertaining people in an archaic event that typically leaves one lying trampled to death on the ground and others with injuries so bad, they're killed.

Wow. One example. One example that's just an accusation, no fact, no charges. Nothing.

You also missed, "...the plant was currently in full compliance with humane slaughter regulations."

You missed the "The new PETA video was recorded in the plant’s beef kill room, which is equipped with a bin that turns the animals upside down and exposes their throats. Following Jewish dietary laws, the animals are killed by rabbis specializing in ritual slaughter who make one long cut across the throat. This type of religious slaughter is allowed under exemptions in federal animal cruelty laws."

So a small section of the slaughter industry doesn't kill animals in a way you think is acceptable, despite the fact that it's legal, fast and puts food on the table for millions.

This isn't entertainment. They're doing it as a source for food and the main reason why these animals were raised. To be slaughtered and eaten.

Running horses around in a an event that's plagued with horse death & injuries just isn't comparable to the entire beef industry.

    Enjoy your burger.

We can live without over a billion cows which we have right now, You didn't used to have meat for almost every meal, instead it was more of a treat unless you lived in a more rural area. Two horses a year die to entertain over a million people, horses that live most of their life in relative luxury compared to a lot of the cattle that major cities get (feedlot cattle). I know people that race horses, the person places themselves at extreme risk as well and the horse is treated extremely well, they are considered part of the family, a lot better treatment than cattle which often just get a number.

The Stampede should do a PETA style ad showing grandpa and young grandson sitting in an empty Calgary Grandstand looking out over an empty infield, G'son asks G'pa what happened to Chuckwagon Racing ?

As the camera pans down the race track a couple of tumbleweeds blow across it and Grandpa goes into dream mode. G'pa explains about all the protests and how the Stampede shut the races down.

G'son snaps G'pa out of the dream state for a second by asking, " but grandpa, what happened to all the horses?"

G'pa explains they were loaded up into livestock trucks ( clue horses walking up ramp into cattle liner ) and all hauled south down the QE2 to Fort Macleod. Then the're shown being unload behind a big building into stalls, all spooked up after hearing a rifle shot in the back ground.

The next clip is from a restaurant in downtown Paris showing a table full of people sitting down ready to enjoy a good, slow simmered Canadian horse flank steak with wine sauce.

    Long live Chuckwagon Racing.
