Bar owners charged in alleged drunk-driving deaths

I just can't agree with this.

Think back to university bar hopping. 90% of the people in any bar, pub, club were SMASHED. Then they would responsibly stumble home on foot, or hail a cab.
How can a bar owner possibly ascertain the soberness of every single person in their establishment short of forcing an unlawful breathalyzer test, and how can they possibly know whether someone intends to drive rather than take a cab or get a ride with a friend?

Doesn't matter if it's realistic, or even possible, you can't possibly expect people to live with the consequences of their own actions? Can you?

Another law that takes personal responsibility away from the offenders.

Oh, I like this. What it will do is cause insurance companies to withdraw or cancel their policies on bars, thus shutting them. It will also cause a lot of people whose bars were on the fence financially to go ahead and close, too. Then, when this stupid, idiotic decision is inevitably extended to liquor shops and wineries there will be a defacto prohibition in Canada.

And then your government will bitch, whine, and complain because they'll be losing precious revenue from liquor and sales taxes.

I don’t see them monitoring what the guy does after he buys a 40oz at the local liquor store. Clearly that man would NEVER get intoxicated and do something wrong."

As far as I know, that's been the case for years in Alberta.

Don't bet against it. If a bartender can be charged with a crime so can a government liquor store clerk.

But it wasn't the bartender, it was the bar being charged. Big difference.

I like it too. Maybe we can get prohibition to work after all. Save a lot of lives.

Well, as an excuse, you can always try to use it. But to make it law is a whole different ballgame...

The person who caused the accident is dead - not sure how much responsibility she can take. Bars have had a responsibility not to serve drunks for ever, and they've been held responsible for doing so before. Not sure if that's such a bad thing.
