    I'm sure the current producers will gladly concede their market to the government.

    Uruguay's national government said Wednesday it hopes to fight a growing crime problem by selling marijuana to citizens registered to buy it, and will send a bill to Congress that would make it the first country in the world to do so.
    Under the plan, only the government would be allowed to sell marijuana and only to adults who register on a government database, letting officials keep track of their purchases over time.

    ...
    "We're shifting toward a stricter state control of the distribution and production of this drug," Fernandez said. "It's a fight on both fronts: against consumption and drug trafficking. We think the prohibition of some drugs is creating more problems to society than the drug itself."

    R=UP

    The Harperites have moved us completely in the opposite direction of the consensus that the rest of the world is coming to. Mandatory minimums for victimless crimes is right up near the top of the list of idiocy that will be their legacy.

    When it comes to Harper's policy on marijuana you're right Curt. It's a no brainer if adults want to smoke weed. I remember living in a neighbourhood where these underage kids were outside smoking up outside a corner store, and ask me if I could buy them some beer as I walked in.

    I said no.

    But, if an election was held tomorrow I'd probably still vote for the Conservatives again under Harper despite that. Only because the alternatives worry me more than the Conservatives do.

    If this law passes then those adults who are so dedicated to smoking pot can feel free to go visit Uruguay....which, if you think about it, is probably one of the reasons why they want to do this and that's to grab some tourist dollars.

    Under this model, if drug-tourism is allowed to flourish it will undermine the whole idea. Maybe they'll allow foreigners to apply? If there's a black market for tourists and no enforcement, not good.

    You need money for a one way ticket to Uruguay Curtman? I'd pitch in for that.

    No thanks. If I wanted to smoke weed, I'd have already done so. If I was to visit somewhere, it would probably India or China. Feel free to chip in for that.

    I'm betting you drink or have drank alcohol in your lifetime. I bet the puritans of prohibition would have said the same thing to you.

    BTW, I don't smoke pot. But I also don't like idiotic sin laws dictating our nation's policies in the face of limitless studies, data and outright facts.
