It's strange how life just keeps repeating itself. I just read about this very thing. The only difference was that the ministers name was Haldane and it happened just before WWI.

In December 1905 Haldane was appointed Minister of War, a post he retained until 1912. Haldane used his portfolio to institute a series of vital military reforms, including the creation of the Territorial Army (many of whose units went off to war as part of the British Expeditionary Force), the Officer Training Corps and Special Reserve, in addition to the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). He also effected great strides in the provision of army medical and nursing facilities.

When war arrived in 1914 it was largely thanks to Haldane's earlier planning that the BEF was able to mobilise for war as quickly as it did.

Mothballed fleet, permanently grounded Harriers, massive troop cuts. How's that austerity thing working out for ya, Britain? Bloody insane way of thinking IMO. :|

I agree with Thanos in that this short sighted penny pinching as in WW I is going to bite the UK in the ass one day as it did then.

I've already managed to avoid one round of redundancies which I was eligible for, although I wonder now if I should have taken it now. 40k tax free would be nice right about now!

There is talk of eliminating the "Black Watch" from the regular Army and further almagamating within the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Geez, you'd think with all the griping Argentina is doing over the Falklands of late that the military would be spared somewhat - short-sighted planning on the part of the government if you ask me.

Gutting the military is always the first step to starting a war. No nation has ever been attacked because it was too strong.

That's an awful big might. I looked into that a few years ago and was a couple of months over their age cutoff and there was zero flexibility when it comes to age.
