Two people are dead after town in India is suddenly overrun by swarms of venomous spiders.

    GAH! Talk about nightmarish... did someone offend a Hindu Spider-Deity? Or did some Aussie spiders stow-away with some filthy hippy backpackers?

    We are lucky to live up north in Canada mother nature has some really nasty insects to the south of us like Bot Flies & Screw Worm Flies.
    I know of a young girl who went on vacation to Florida and died shortly after the doctors found Screw Worm Fly Maggotes in her body.
    Unlike regular flies maggotes which eat dead flesh these maggotes eat living flesh very creepy... 8O

    I agree... I much prefer being up here as opposed to the tropical and sub-tropical regions. At least the insects freeze up here and don't grow to fist-sized monstrosities... Anything over 25C and I get antsy, though being in NS I can at least jump into the North Atlantic when that DOES happen!

    All we have are mosquitos for nasty bugs(malaria and dengue fever). There are centipedes, but their venom isn't deadly. However, we do have a few venemous snakes. Mind you there places here that when you go for a walk in the bush you can come out of the trees with leeches. The ocean is a little different as we do have box jellies and sea snakes amongst other nastier critters.

    My mom use to work for Blue Cross in the 1980's the young woman was a customer this was her first and last trip anywhere poor thing! :(

    There is an inverse relationship between cold climate and how poisonous snakes and spiders are. The Black Widows we have in mid Canada will bareley leave you with a red mark, but in Austrailia they will f- you up.

    In conversations with my southern friends I often bring up those flys. I say that we got 10cm of snow over night, they ask "What is snow? I need to mow my lawn!"

    I say, "What's a hurricane? What's a brown recluse? What's a screw worm fly? What's a brown rat? What's a cockroach? I'll take the snow, thank you."

    I'll take the cold over huge insects any day!

    I lived in Japan for two years and saw some of the biggest, most disgusting insects I've ever seen - fortunately, only two of them were poisonous (a wasp and centipede - both at least finger length in size).

    My first morning in my new home I found a spider the size of my hand (from leg to leg) in my shower - I calmly called the previous teacher, who was still around, and asked if it was poisonous. It wasn't so I got a fly swatter and killed it - but it gave me quite a start when I first saw it after closing the shower door.

    Conversely, I did find having a Praying Mantis resident on the bush outside my front door pretty cool though.

    Why kill spiders - they keep insects down. Just move it somewhere appropriate.

    Well, seeing as I was in the shower, I was wet and naked, so there was no way I was going to scoop it up and toss him out the door!

    Hey, everyone! Apparently, the new teacher from Canada likes to run around naked! Yeah, that's just what I needed... :lol:

    Besides, once a bug comes inside, it's fair game IMO. Stay outside and do whatever you want, but set foot inside my house and you're toast! :twisted:

    The Kingston area is the worst I've seen in Canada for number of spiders but I haven't found any that were a danger to people or pets.
