On May 19, 2012 I Chris Summerville, CEO of the Schizophrenia Society of Canada held my regular meeting with Vince Li, the person living with schizophrenia who beheaded Tim McLean. I have been visiting Li on an average of once every two months since his r

Oh... he thought Tim was an Alien? well then I guess there's no harm. I often find it hard to discern humans from Aliens...

    /sarcasm

If the "I thought he was an Alien" comment isn't enough to keep this guy locked up long term I don't know to say.

anytime someone confuses [INSERT NAME HERE] with [INSERT NON-HUMAN ENTITY HERE] there is something seriously wrong. Vince Li cannot and should not ever be allowed back into society.

I think even the most cursory understanding of schizophrenia might allow you to agree that he should remain locked up but also to blame the disease and not the person that is afflicted with it.

At the time of Mclean's murder, Li was off the meds he had been given to treat his schizophrenia. How is it that he only knows that he has schizophrenia, when he'd been diagnosed for it, and was receiving treatment for it years before...treatment he decided to suspend. Sounds like bullshit. He knew he was schizophreinic before he had started the Vince Li hunt for ET Tour, why didn't he call his doctor then?

I agree, I do blame the disease, however he was off his meds at the time of the murder.

How many schizophrenics are off their meds in a given day and how many board a bus carrying a hunting knife and decapitate and eat a passenger?

I'll wager not many. The off his meds is a great bit of chaff though. If that were the case, I'd expect to see a lot more bus beheadings.

...and we're not talking about other schizophrenics and what they may or may not do while off their meds. We are talking specifically about Vince Li, who has demonstrated what he is capable of when he goes off his meds.

He probably thought they were aliens who were trying some sort of experiment on him

He has and he should remain locked up. But the hindsight exercise gets a little tiring especially with the suggestion that he might have had clue one what would happen when he stopped his meds.

It is difficult to predict what will happen when you introduce a massive variable like not taking meds to a person who has a pre-existing mental disorder. I'd wager that Vince's psychotic episode was on the extreme end of the scale. However now we know without any doubt what-so-ever what he is capable of when he is off his meds. Because of the very real threat to the public, for his safety and ours, Vince Li needs to remain in a facility where he is monitored and medicated.

Paranoid schizophrenics that have been diagnosed, like Li had been, are made aware of the fact that they can suffer psychotic breaks when they don't medicate and anything can happen during these breaks with reality. They're nuts, not stupid.

The argument that you put forward is sort of like the intoxicated person getting behind a wheel and killing someone. Can they claim they didn't know that was going to happen as a form of defense, after the fact? The meds can also be compared to a seat belt. You don't know if you're going to have an accident or how severe it will be, but you are well aware that you could have one ....and that's why it's the law that we wear safety restraints(helmets, life vests, medic alert bracelets etc)....just in case

And on a brighter note, we here in BC have our own little mental health drama to liven up our day.

Man who carjacked actors walks away from psych hospital

The man who carjacked a BMW carrying actor Carly Pope and then smashed the car into a downtown Vancouver building has disappeared from his psychiatric hospital.

Now granted he didn't behead or eat anyone but things like this just point out that even under pyschiatric supervision, with unescorted or escorted day passes, these people can still become a threat to society.

I wonder who was monitoring his meds?
