Levon Helm, the singing drummer that gave The Band its Southern swagger, died on Thursday from throat cancer. He was 71.

    We banged out a few Band tunes tonight at band practice for Levon. I'm a big fan; all the guys I jam are with are also. I loved his cameo as Gen. John Bell Hood in that Tommy Lee Jones movie a short while back. "The Niiiiiiiight they drove Ole Dixie down"...brilliant. RIP.
