The ipod and laptop generation doesn't know what proper music is supposed to sound like. Listening through those crappy earbuds and laptop speakers. Even big names got carried away trying to cater to them, look up something called loudness wars where most commerical music sounded like utter shite. Thankfully thats getting over with now.
But still one can never feel or even hear music as it is meant to be over those crappy earbuds and lappy cans and no Dr Dre Beats earbuds arn't any good either.

Anyways sort of offtopic and rant over !
I have many of the same albums on many different mediums. On order, best to worst sounding of the exact same track across all mediums:
On LP on my 60's era tube amplified monstrosity On CD on my 90s Era Bose system (mix of digital and analog) In FLAC format, played from my Blackberry to truck audio system (Sony) In MP3 format on my iPod nano. Fingers dragging across a blackboard.
I agree, I have an iPod and an iPod Touch but my BlackBerry had WAY better sound when plugged into my car's system. Plus when I get a call the music gets paused till I hang up. Apple also supply garbage earbuds. Air Canada gives out better.
This is the reason people listen to some really crappy music today... doesn't make a difference if the music is good or not when listening to MP3's with the buds in your ears.
Is this a chance for Sony to become relevant again outside of video games?
It appears someone needs a lesson on what Sony actually does.
Not at all - Sony used to have cachet, having marketed and developed iconic products like the Walkman and Playstation, but they haven't really outperformed anyone in a long time in the electronics field. Sure they make TVs, computers, and cameras, but who doesn't nowadays?
In the 1980s/90s, Sony was like Apple is now - today they are more like the Apple of the early 1990s.
Well mp3s can sound really good if converted properly and at a good rate because the Mp3 encoding rules are not set in stone so if you have a crappy encoder it will sound crappy, but atleast there is a fixed standard for decoding Mp3s,
But yeah with the crappy itunes compression and listening on buds just makes everything sound awfull. When I email tracks out I use the highest bit rate my software allows at 450kbps and also I make sure to put in some dithering aswell.
I just feel sorry for the ipod generation who don't know what a drum kit or a bass should sound like and the buzzing in their ears is the bomb for them !

There is some pretty good music nowadays. You just won't find it on Radio or TV.

Ray. face it. they just going to bring back live orchestras into the movie theatres as a regular part of the show. As for the MP3 ear bud thing.....you haven't experienced real music like AC/DC until you've experienced it through bone conduction. it also helps drown out the shitty karaoke of the neighbours. The old lady seriously sounds like someone is skinning a cat live.

C, you forgot to add listening to the wife at the absolute bottom of the list
Don't have one of those any more.
