Gas prices are all ways a touchy issue down in the states. For one, when fuel is priced by the gallon it makes the increases seem that much larger. Secondly, gas prices tend to serve as a constant reminder to voters of how poorly the US's economy is doing so yes, gas prices can have a big impact on an election.

Bear in mnd that Reagan was deeply opposed by the Republican establishment.

Probably, that’s not what I'm getting at though. When you having little to no money in your pocket and you go fill up and it's more expensive it tends to piss you off. Salt in the wound basically.
