Could rising gas prices hurt President Obama's re-election?

A new poll shows American consumers are unhappy with the Obama administration’s handling of the rising gasoline prices. Could this be the ‘sleeper’ issue of 2012?

Really? This is the one thing that could cost Obama the election?

With some people, yes it is.

In some circles it is also starting to resonate that Obama had said he wanted this to happen.

CNBC’s John Harwood: So could the (high) oil prices help us?

Barack Obama: I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. The fact that this is such a shock to American pocketbooks is not a good thing. But if we take some steps right now to help people make the adjustment, first of all by putting more money in their pockets, but also by encouraging the market to adapt to these new circumstances more rapidly, particularly U.S. automakers…

In short, Obama favors higher gas/petrol prices as a means of making his electric cars economically feasible. Therefore anyone wanting lower fuel prices should not be looking for Obama to give it to them since he wants quite the opposite.

Obama himself also admitted hoping for higher gas prices going into an election is political suicide

That doesn't matter to the haters though.

Haters? Obama killed the Keystone XL pipeline at the same time the Iranians went bonkers. Us 'haters' didn't have to do a damn thing.

Even now, we're quite content to sit back and watch.

Like I've said before, the only man who can get Romney elected President is Barack Obama. Looks like he's doing just that.

It's been four years, Scape. Give it a rest.

The 'black guy' will need to get re-elected on his accomplishments and if all he can do is utter impotent bleatings about how Bush did him wrong then I guess you folks are looking at a Republican President come this time next year.

Obama will get re-elected for the same reason Harper did, no serious opposition.

I'd have to agree with that. *I still like Obama though and I think he deserves a second term.

Gas prices are all ways a touchy issue down in the states. For one, when fuel is priced by the gallon it makes the increases seem that much larger. Secondly, gas prices tend to serve as a constant reminder to voters of how poorly the US's economy is doing so yes, gas prices can have a big impact on an election.

Sounds like that is about. Why the Republicans seem to select people who seem like they came out of "One Step Beyond" is a mystery. They needed somebody closer to Ronald Reagan.

Bear in mnd that Reagan was deeply opposed by the Republican establishment.

If the US economy was doing better, gas prices would be higher, no?

Probably, that’s not what I'm getting at though. When you having little to no money in your pocket and you go fill up and it's more expensive it tends to piss you off. Salt in the wound basically.

Got ya. But if the economy was booming, gas prices would be even higher and people would bitch about that.
