And they've done nothing about it. Meanwhile, it's perfectly legal for the young lady to win the lottery and to keep on taking subsidies because the state is too stupid to do anything about it.

This sure does give new meaning to the phrase "Give em an inch and they'll take a mile".
She won 1 mil of which she had to pay 500k in taxes. So she didn't buy her million dollar house, nor the other house she owns with her winnings. I can't see her getting a mortgage for those two houses with no income, so what gives here? She must have been scamming the system before she ever won the lottery.
Just a little info:
Most US lottery prizes reflect the total value of an annuity that pays out over twenty to even as much as forty years.
For about the last decade the lotteries have offered winners the option of taking the cash value of the annuity as opposed to having it paid out over time. In the case of the young lady in Michigan the cash value was reportedly about $750,000.00 and after state, Federal, and local income taxes she was left with about half of that amount or about $350,000.00 so the 'million dollar' lottery winner thing is not exactly accurate.
She's still wrong, for sure, but she's not as rich as the media is making it sound mostly because 'million dollar lottery winner on welfare' sounds a lot better than the truth.
