The province should order the city of Toronto to build subways, even if city council votes for light rail transit instead, Opposition Leader Tim Hudak said Tuesday.
These idiots will say anything. A year ago, they said it would be an insult to democracy if McGuinty interfered with the Ford-dominated Council's TTC plan in any way. Now that council itself is turning on Ford and his plan, they're saying the Province should overrule Council if necessary to impose a supposedly "better" plan.
That's all you needed to say right there. Of course, I'm not blmaing Ford for it all since the City's public works have been neglected for decades now.
Nevermind subways, you can't be a world class city when you have sink holes appearing here and there.
Why the obssesion with being "world class"? Why not aim for being a city that people like living in? After that you can work on being world class, what ever that actually means.

People tend not to appreciate removing 1/3 of lanes along two major arteries in Toronto for the sake of streetcars all while destroying all the businesses in the area.
People like a good transit system and roads that aren't congested all to shit.
Was listening to Dean Blundell this morning, his thought is pretty much mine. I don't give a shit what you do, just make a fucking decision and stop the embarrassing bickering.
"OnTheIce" said Toronto is a fucking disaster. These Council people that want streetcars all over Toronto are completely retarded.
To be a World Class city, you need a good subways system, not this half assed plan of street cars.
I agree, the last time I was in Toronto was an eye-opener. I couldn't believe that the Toronto subway system was hardly developed and that streetcars were still used at all.
If the streetcar people want to maintain the surface transportation links, they should be using low floor LRTs like Edmonton will be using for two new LRT lines, although personally I would prefer underground lines.
This report explains low floor LRT and compares it with streetcars;

Thats like saying we should turn every neighbourhood street into a billion-dollar expressway. Subways have their place, but you cant run subway lines under every single city steet and you cant service as many areas per transit dollar. Just look at Mel's subway to nowhere.
As far as im concerned, people who live in the city should take transit. People who live outside the city are visitors and their needs are secodary. Regardless of how many transit vehicles we take off the roads, we are near the limits of how many cars the city can support. The roads cant be expanded any further.

Near the limit? Well past the limit, and putting street level transit is a step in the wrong direction.
Subways do have their place and they'll go just fine under Eglinton and Sheppard.
BTW, that type of attitude, that people outside the City are secondary is just plain ignorant. You want to make life better in your City? Accommodate the hundreds of thousands of people who travel into Toronto to work and run the City. Hell, 70% of the staff at City Hall don't live in Toronto.

I agree that the subways should be built before the streetcars, but both systems would compliment each other as the street cars would be feeder lines to the subway system. San Francisco has had this kind of arrangement for some forty years and it works great. You can ride the subway quickly and efficiently between cities and then switch to the streetcars to get from downtown out to the Sunset or the Marina.

Toronto plans to take one of Toronto's busiest roads (Eglinton Ave), a 6 lane road that runs right through Toronto (And most importantly, Scarborough) and remove 2 of those lanes and put streetcars all along.
We tried this once before, the St.Clair disaster. Traffic in the area is brutal, the roads are a confusing mess and the business were destroyed during the process.
How many times do you have to shoot yourself in the foot before you realize it hurts?
