The icebreaker at the heart of Canada's premier Arctic science program has been pulled from service, leaving researchers scrambling to find other ships to take them to the North.

This is exactly why Canada needs more than one heavy icebreaker. We should be building tat least wo replacements, not just the CGS Diefenbaker.

Canada has but one ship to patrol the Arctic? And it's alongside for the forseeable future?

On the upside of this news I guess the Northwest Passage is open to US & Russian submarine traffic again.

Yeah, like either country has respected Canada's Arctic sovereignty regardless.

So we find billions of dollars for jets that can't even communicate from the North but only find enough cash to build one icebreaker? Why not bring back the Polar 8 project so we can actually do something?

Premiere means first performance - so it was barely out to sea and it needed repairs?

No, in this case, it means it is Canada's best equipped vessel for Arctic research.

That would be premier. Just as it's not premiere Redford.
