Peruvians were snacking on popcorn nearly 7,000 years ago, according to a recent paper co-authored by Smithsonian researcher Dolores Piperno.

I always thought Orville Redenbacher(sp) looked kinda old.

The group's discoveries indicated that corn was being made into flour at that time but was not yet a staple of the South American diet.

South America's distance from the original source of teosinte and its dry climate, when compared to the humid jungles of Central America, likely contributed to the plant's evolution into the corn varieties we are familiar with today, Piperno said.

I find this interesting. It was a food crop before it could cooked in a pot and was climate dependent. Geography was everything in those times.

location, location, location. Unfortunately too many carbs for me....I have to eat the entire bowl/bag, not just a handful, so I avoid it.

Same here. Corn is pretty vacant on the nutrition side, esp. popcorn which seems to be mostly air. Also movie popcorn is scary expensive for what it costs them to make it.
