Iran has in its possesion a completely intact RQ-170 stealth drone.

    Merry Christmas Iran, Russia, China.

    Love Obama

Big deal - the Russians got a hold of U-2s and all sorts of other military hardware during the Cold War and they still couldn't manufacture planes and other weapons systems that matched what the West did. I'm pretty sure the Chinese military industrial complex isn't any better than the Soviet one was.

All this will allow them to do is build a half-assed copy of this that still won't be as good as the RQ-170.

Besides, how is this Obama's fault? Just because he's Commander-in-Chief, he isn't aware of every penny ante mission that takes place around the world you know.

    Dear Iran,

The US currently maintains significant levels of high tech military gear, but using it to keep an eye on your suspicious activities might mean losing it. I'm going to recommend they keep it in a warehouse, thanks.

Having a drone is long way from duplicating it. The electronics and optics are uber high tech and you have to have to support multiple programs to duplicate it. I read the Russians are rearming alright but they don't have enough money to modernize the whole array of weapons systems they got. It takes mooocho money to maintain the modern military.

President Obama was presented with three separate options for retrieving or destroying the drone. The president ultimately decided not to proceed with any of the plans because it could have been seen as an act of war

From the article. He "gave it away".

    They should have destroyed it.

I'd hardly call deciding not to bomb/invade a foreign country 'giving it away'.

He made a decision not to bomb/invade a country that already has tense relations with the US (and most of the West). If he had bombed/invaded Iran to destroy the drone, people would have been all over him for trying to start another war.

All that would do is provide Ahmadinejad with more ammunition that the Americans are out to get him and destroy his country.

Fortunately you're not a military advisor.

Because preventing high technology from falling into hostile hands is such a poor move.

Should have sent in the A-Team.

The fact that cost vs benefits and risk assessment is lost on you in a military context means you can continue to bluster but that's all it is really. Oh and a bit of partisan hackery as well.

Fact is you don't really know the context here and the decision was obviously made with high level military advice.

It isn't as if this drone was sitting in the middle of Tehran. Likely came down in some remote field where the population is 90% Goat. The Americans typically do not leave high value assets behind like this for the enemy to retrieve (especially intact), and destroy them before they can be retrieved by hostile forces.

Hell the "Stealth Blackhawk" that went down in Pakistan got this treatment (save for the tail boom), and Pakistan is theoretically an ally.
