A very sad state of affairs. I dont believe for one second that he
fired his weapon in self-defence as he reacted to what he thought was a threat inside a tent at the military base

Without knowing all the facts I'm reluctant to pass judgment. PTSD can affect some folks much more seriously than others. The fact that he had his weapon loaded against orders is what weighs against him most heavily here, but then if the orders came from Ottawa (which they likely did) then it's probable that no one on the ground in Afg cared about them. Pinheads in Washington are fond of issuing orders that are in conflict with the situation on the other side of the planet so the potential for such to come out of Ottawa exists, as well.

Everyone cared about unloading in KAF, if this had happened outside the wire or maybe even in a FOB I may see it but not in KAF. From what I can remember at the time, the initial story was that they were playing quickdraw. I had only heard of the stranger in the shadows defense until coming back to Canada.

I'll defer to what you say on this.

Army rumour chain (which can be surprisingly true) is that they were playing quick draw and had the mags in so that they could see who could get it out and pull the trigger first. So at some point, whether he loaded the mag, cocked the weapon, then fired, or cocked it, loaded the mag, fired, re-cocked for another round, then fired, he eventually put a round in the chamber, and shot a guy.

Dumb game to play, and he should have known his weapons state...

    That was the initial story...
The defense attorney coming up with this self defense-story might have made it even worse...

One life taken needlessly, a family mourning for silliness and the guilty guy's life is ruined.

    Pretty crappy all round really.

The Reservist that was killed still had a family. Show some compassion.

Dont worry, he served the minimum time needed and pulled pin. It's the same tune we have heard from Smacle before, it shouldnt surprise anyone. I guess he feels that after he's put in 3 years he can talk all the smack he wants about fellow soldiers.

Would he have received a different sentence if he hadn't tried to pull a BS story?

Dont know, but I doubt it. I have a feeling they new what the sentence would be before the trial started, they were just going through the motions.
