The Harper government, which styles itself “farmers first,” is being accused of hoarding Canadian Wheat Board gains that should be paid to grain growers before Ottawa dismantles the marketing agency's monopoly.

    Why are farmers paying for this? They didn't get to vote on it because the "federal election is all the vote Harper needs." Federal money, then, should fund the change.

    Agreed. I think this demonstrates the hazard of block voting as is the present habit of prairie voters. If your party is in power it takes your support for granted and will just proceed as it suits their own interests. If there were a mix of parties representing the farm areas the government would be much more hesitant to try something like this.
