Cutbacks have left the UK without a single warship specifically tasked with protecting the country's shores for the past month, the Ministry of Defence confirmed today. The Royal Navy normally provides a minimum coverage of a frigate or destroyer ful

so...besides having a larger sub force (which is also due to be cut, just not as bad as the surface fleet) the UK has the same size navy as Canada. Interesting.

    Well, as it stands today the RN has the following;

    19 Frigates
    3 Destroyers
    4 Amphib Assault ships/Helicopter carriers
    15 mine sweepers
    7 Patrol ships
    18 patrol boats

    A few Ice patrol/survey ships

    3 Regiments of Royal Marines

    11 Nuke attack subs

    4 Nuke bomber subs.

Again, that's the fleet today. With all due respect, I think they need a few more cuts to get to the size of the current RCN.

Is the UK expecting an invasion anytime soon?

Illustrious is being converted to a chopper carrier and they have 2 mid-size carriers being built for F35's. But they did mothball the Harriers in a bad strategic/needed monetary move.

No shit eh? I remember seeing it in Halifax about 15 years ago. A shame when an institution like the RN with it's history is reduced to this

Yea, but you gotta live within your means and sea power isn't the first line of defence the UK itself. Subs are handy in projecting power but boots on the ground with air power has been the post Cold-war need, not BFO boats.

Ehhh, quite a disgusting spectacle. Gut the military but the fucking chavs and immigrants will still get all their goddamn undeserved lifelong welfare money? Apparently this is what the vaunted principle of budgetary "austerity" gets you.

I guess there'll bee alot of RN Officers shuffling off on half pay. Without the ships and with the budget cuts they're not likely to keep a bloated officer corps like the Canadian Navy does.

Although having some subie making coffee for the higherups in Ottawa was always an excellent use of highly skilled and trained manpower.

Well, they do have nukes so while they can't really defend their shores in the classical sense any enemy that attacks them will face a nuclear response since that's about all the Brits have left.
