Nice to see a bit on non-partisan praise coming out though. Both the Liberals and the CPC have had a role to play in our weathering the financial storm so far.
It's interesting to realize the Martin surpluses where cause by going to far on the cuts side. More precise management would have left a balanced budget. With the surpluses Martin was able to offer a 1/2% of GDP tax cut and a 1/2% of GDP fix to the CPP (working from memory). In addition the surplus brought down the debt ratio, which saved our bacon. Just saying the cuts were deep and then put to political use.
The cuts were cuts though I think a lot of that was passed to the provinces. So really, how deep were they?
The Libs set the course for our ride through the recession. The Tories tweaked it a bit here and there but they didn't do the usual 180 that most changes in government herald. Both governments deserve a pat on the back.

then there's that Pinko Liberal Tony Clement that's quoted in the story:

“As a result, from 1997 to 2007, our country enjoyed a decade of strong economic performance, with Canada leading the G7 in economic growth.”
For all but one year of the decade Clement referred to, Canada was governed by Liberals, not Conservatives. Clement went on to credit Chretien’s “program review” exercise — which cut waste in every government department — as one of the reasons Canada got back on track economically
Not that I support all those measures, but I just wish facts like this would stay in public memory for the sake of informed debate. We all know that in a few weeks, or certainly by the time of the next election, Conservitives will go back to pretending that "tax and spend Liberals" drive the country into economic ruin and Liberals will go back to pretending that they're the protectors of cherished government spending programs from penny-pinching Conservatives.
The greatest contribution either party has made to the health of the Canadian economy has been to let the experts at the Bank of Canada chart macroeconomic policy. As long as our politicians remain smart enough to let the experts do their jobs, we'll be just fine.
