I wonder if it would be possible to kick start our own program in Canada...all the spin off jobs would be a boon to a regional economy. Stop buying stuff that's one step away from being recyled as razor blades and kitchen utensils.

What a fucking joke, more than $2 billion down the tubes again and we end up with nothing. This government can't even give us decent icebreakers for the arctic but now they're considering nukes so they can operate under the ice, something here just doesn't make sense.

Agreed. If we were to scrap the diesel/electric then why not go hydro at least? It's quieter then nuclear/diesel subs combined and no where near the cost and has range to boot.
Good point. The Germans (as always) have some excellent short range sub designs. You think we could get a license to make some of our own or buy one or two off them. Considering they are our NATO allies and all.

R&D would cost too much, just order some from Germany and make it a government policy not to buy used ships.
Buying spares for equipment made in limited numbers is pretty dicey. Similarly trying to build your own in limited numbers is dicey. There needs to be like one NATA submarian builder. Any NATO diesel submarine would he half American because of the electronics.

Imagine a nuclear Collins class.
Not so much.
Nuke subs again? You think 34$ Billion for new ships was huge wait till they get a load of this...
Liberals are are excited about 2015 now.
