A rally held to recognize the Toronto District School Board for allowing rights and freedoms turned into a shouting match Saturday between religious groups.

Sure, bring back the Lords Prayer like it use to be. Bring back Christmas concerts and they can pray in the cafeteria. Out of all the cutting they have done to slice away religion from school (which I supported) they bite there own words and accomidate muslim students religious beliefs? WTH.

As I said before, these groups protesting should demand their own prayer time and place in school - a different one for each sect, of course. Don't see how the school can say no.

The only schools that should require prayer are Sunday Schools or ones founded by a religious order or denomination. My son attended a Dominican school from Gr.4 - Gr.8 He was expected to attend Mass and religious instruction while at school, as were the non Christian Chinese kids(and a half dozen Muslim kids). The main thing he learned from this experience was to hate nuns.

What this is still going on ? Like I said I don't see why everyones panties is in a twist, but ofcourse fron thugs like the JDL what else can you expect. I'm sure they wouldn't mind moving the weekend from Sabbath and the Lords Day to somewhere in the middle of the week, say Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Jews got their Saturday and the Christians got their Sunday, is it really that bad a small group of Muslims get around 40 mins on a Friday.

If you're going to talk about Equality then move thw weekend to the middle of the week. If "we" cannot have 40 mins of Friday then why should the other two Abrahamic faiths get their own holiday.

I shall also fully support 40min services on Saturday and Sunday for the Jews and Christians respectively

See....the whole argument is ridiculos, all of this is basically much to do about nothing.

Interesting coming from a clergyman. it's not bang on the exact topic but it does relate to what role religious beliefs have in public schools.

Religion has no place in schools at all.

Focus on education and leave the parents to teach religion at home as they see fit.

The practice of any religion should not take place in a school, but I think there is value in the examination of religions. If everyone was much more informed about religion, arguments like this would not exist.

The only time religion should be discussed in schools is in the context of cultural geography.

It's crap like this that really makes me want to get rid of freedom of religion in the Charter.

The school board is actually following jurisprudence--that is, that religion should be accommodated to a reasonable extent. The reason it has to be accommodated is that freedom of religion is constitutionally protected. If it weren't, they'd have no more of an issue that Buddy who says he's spiritually obligated to blow a fatty at 4:20 every day.

I think that drawing a line, prevents arguments like this.

The schools should discuss religion in the proper context during history class and other classes where religion may be relevant to the topic.

We should not have publicly funded religious schools. We shouldn't be learning about "God" in school as a separate class.

You don't believe this yourself. Yes the Christians got their Sunday - that's because our culture is Christian back a long ways. Saturday was added for secular reasons, not for the Jews. And since shabbat starts on Friday at sundown, Jews didn't get Friday as well.

Sorry, there should be no religious observances in schools. Or if there are, everybody should get a kick at the can.

You see I have no problem with going out a little out of our way to accomodate someone.

Like here many christians take days off on Chritsmas, many Hindus take days off Divali, students and employees. I see it nothing more than giving way to someone in traffic or giving uo your seat to a lady.

Getting you're panties in a twist over it is just insane.

Now ofcourse this involves Muslims so all sorts of stuff like indoctrination, radcialization etc etc will come on.

On the otherhand I also have no problem if they put blanket ban on anything religious, because for Muslims, Islam is very flexible and there are always alternatives available.

But you also have to look at whose is making all the noise, hate group thugs like the JDL and the strictly anti Muslim Hindu Advocacy.
