OTTAWA — Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Walt Natynczyk has spent more than $1 million since 2008 flying on government VIP aircrafts as an expensive alternative to regular commercial flights -- travelling to sporting events and fundraising dinners, as well as

    What a BS article.

First of all the security risks of having the CDS travel commercial are unexceptably high. Second, these planes were bought for this exact purpose so let the military use them. Lastly $1M over three years is nothing compared to the money thrown away in other areas.

These planes were bought for the exact purpose of ferrying him to dinners, sporting events and family vacations? Seriously?

    Had to look that up:

    1. Unexceptable
When a statement or question cannot be contradicted with the word "except"

Really? What is the added risk of flying from Ottawa to Calgary on West Jet or Air Canada? Looks like he does fly commercial afterall. Just not always.

If you like it so much you pay for it. In the meantime I have a dinner with the premier to attend in Houston Texas, you guys are foot the bill for the flight. Thanks taxpayers!

I would like CTV to find out which of the dinners/galas/sporting events he attended at the behest of the government vs which he went to of his own will.

    Family vacation...really...inexcusable.

But, I am betting dollars to donoughts that they amount used on purely personal interests is far less than what is advertised.

Btw, CTV did make special mention on air last night, that 'some of the events listed were attended by the general on orders from the government'...

And why would he have to use a private plane if it was on orders from the govt? Bureaucrats fly commercial on orders of the govt all the time. If it's a matter of scheduling, I can see it, but a little planning goes a long way.

Government + Effective Planning = Pipe Dream.

    Jokes aside

He "makes every effort to use commercial flights whenever available and where his official travel schedule permits," the statement says.

While commercial airlines fly to the destinations Natynczyk travelled to, "commercial travel often doesn't provide the flexibility (he) needed."

    From article.

Well surely he can schedule his vacations so he can fly commercial? As usual there is likely a bit of outright abuse in these expenses, a lot of laziness about not even trying to fly commerical, and some opposition grandstanding. But hurray for the opposition, if they didn't bring this sort of thing to light it would be even worse than it is. And that applies to whoever is in power and who's the opposition.

This is unnaceptable. Government staff that aren't under direct security threat should be using commercial transport. We have to accept that Harper flies on the government dime, and now we find that the Governor General also charged a lot of flights because apparently she is important. This man however can fly Westjet.

The vacation part I agree with, even though it was official government business that caused him to miss his scheduled commercial flight....

The trip, Cyr says, was "not deemed to be a personal trip as the vacation delay was service-related."

    Also from the article.

It seems excessive, from my read of the article. It's disappointing that such a high level person would need scrutinizing. You can't really fire the head of the military for an infraction. I suggest I just look the other way.

I'm OK with it. It offers the flexibility he needs, what with troops in combat and the need to stay in touch.
