The Economist Intelligence Unit, a division of Britain's Economist magazine, says Vancouver has slipped to third place behind Melbourne, Australia and Vienna, Austria because of a highway closure on Vancouver Island.

The Malahat Highway north of Victoria was closed for 22 hours in April after the crash of a fuel tanker truck.

Many Vancouverites are wondering why a highway closure on Vancouver Island -- about 60 kilometres away -- would affect the city's score.

Goes to show just how stupid these things really are.

I wonder how a city where it takes $150,000 income to qualify for a mortgage for the average house (with 25% down) but the median family income is $65,000 can be considered the most livable.

Hard to argue with their choice of Melbourne.

Though, according to On the Beach, it becomes the only livable city in the world eventually.

Probably a hair's breadth between No. 1 and No. 10 on that list. It was nice while it lasts. Good on, Melbourne.

Actually, Melbourne succumbs to the radiation eventually too - in Shute's book, every person on Earth dies.

Yep, just like the UN's rating of countries - Canada was tops for a decade or so, but has fallen a few spots - however the scores between 1 and 10 are all relatively close.

Being last doesn't mean being the only one left forever.

It's livable because if you're only making $65k (and you're not a Canadian) you get subsidized so you can afford to live there.

Like how Van is letting poor people move into $2mil waterfront condos.

No family making $65k is getting subsidized. They're not poor people.

Having subsidized housing in the Olympic village was a nice idea about inclusiveness, but handled idiotically. For the most part, that was during the NPA's watch. Those are our righties, not to be confused with the NDP.

Basically a lot of middle class families have been getting pushed out of Vancouver. Unless they inherit a house from mom and dad they really can't afford to buy a house in Vancouver anymore as a first time buyer. We're becoming more and more stratified between the rich and the poor with no middle. But then why should be be any different than the way the whole world is heading.

I thought that at the books end there were still the guys on the sub and some in the Antarctic, which would have made Vostock Station the most livable place on earth.

    This was published today.

    http://intraspec.ca/povertyCanada.php

It shows the poverty line for a Vancouver family of four being defined as an income just shy of $61,000.00 per year.

A family of five or more (not unusual for immigrants) would then logically qualify for assistance.

I do know they scuttle the American submarine at the end.

It defines the living wage as 61k. There are no programs that us the LICO that I am aware of. So you're just talking out of your ass here.

We do have a renter's subsidy program, but it's meager and has a much lower cutoff than 61k.
The Rental Assistance Program provides eligible low-income, working families with cash assistance to help with their monthly rent payments.

To qualify, families must have a gross household income of $35,000 or less, have at least one dependent child, and have been employed at some point over the last year.
It's based on a sliding scale, so people earning near 35k will get very little. Basically the family has to be very poor, yet working to get much at all.
