The federal government is getting out of the business of inspecting provincial slaughterhouses — a controversial move expected to save Ottawa a few million dollars a year.

    Like most of them, this is an incredible bad idea. The margin in places like this means they will slip 'D' grade meat in place of 'A' whenever they think they can get away with it.

    What, with a two and a half year lead time, your telling me the provinces that will be affected by this can't take over the role of inspectors?

    Instead of bleating about it like it's going to happen tomorrow, use those two and half years to make sure a provincial system is in place.
