Is it just me or is there a lot of child porn stories today? Some major busts going on that's for sure.

They rolled up a group of 600 people, with an estimated 16,000 DVD's worth of child porn. Yeah, lot of child porn stories today.

I find this strange though

Is it routine to check peoples laptops and handhelds ?

They are allowed to check your laptop and handheld. Make sure when you bring your laptop across the border that you don't have gay porn on it. A gay guy was arrested (or not allowed into the country or something, I forgot) because he had video's of "water sport" on his laptop.
Make sure you delete all your shit and save it on an external drive, and don't bring that one.

I know they're allowed to, but I wonder just how often it actually happens? I've brought a laptop on a plane a few times and never had any issues.

Wouldn't that be some kind of invasion of privacy or something. I know about asking to switch on or vice versa any device just so see if it actually is what it is supposed to or pass it through a scanner, but going through your laptop or hand held !

I find that extremely invasive. What if I got intimate pics I don't want anyone to say or someother very personal stuff !

I had my suitcase rooted around in in Mazatlan. Invasive and annoying, but also a neccesary evil. That's why, as you said, you just have to be careful what you pack.
What I found even worse was when we went to Ottawa a while ago and my 6 monthold daughter was patted down in the airport.

There seems to be frequent stories like this about child porn. It's really disturbing that there is so much of it out there. It seems when people get busted (like this fellow) they are caught with hundreds of these pictures on their computers.

What bothers me the most is who are all these children? How on earth did they end up getting photographed to begin with, and by whom? You never hear anything about them... and the effect having done that (and lord knows what else) has on them.

Yeah thats what I also wonder. I guessing that most of these are shot by pervs of their victims, which makes it even more sicker.
