A rocket carrying a telescope which will be the most powerful in space has been launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Scientists have already nicknamed the Zenit-3SB the "green" rocket because it uses kerosene and oxygen as its fuel and is

Yes indeed, NASA isn't going to be doing much of anything. It will just be the Russians, the Chinese and even the possibly the the North (fucking) Koreans.

What the hell is happening in America? It literally is turning 3rd world before our eyes. They are slowly becoming like the banana republics in Latin America, struggling with financial mis management and what not.

America went to the moon in 1960s. Today, they can't even even put a man in orbit.

    Congrats to Russia,.

Borrow and spend has ruined us. But with the matter of space exploration it's been a shortsighted Congress with both parties at fault for ending manned spaceflight.

And the best part is that spaceflight has spawned off so many great technologies that have changed mankind's standards of living.

I guess spaceflight is not really a vote winner.

I read that SETI will be shut down. IMO it's a disaster.

It was. The Shuttle was brought about so that components were manufactured or assembled in every single state of the union, so that politicians could make it look like they were in favour of jobs - and so that cancelling it would work against them.

It's also what killed the program, because costs skyrocketed for a simple orbital mission as compared to the Mercury missions. The new heavy lift rockets will do LEO flight much cheaper than the shuttle. Much like the Russians have done all along.

Don't forget that the robot arms on the shuttles were made in Canada along with scores of other components. To a great degree, the shuttle was yours just as much as it was ours.

It was indeed. The side benefits from the techonolgy development are far reaching. For example, development of the the main engines led to pacemakers. The Canadarm was a small but key contribution, and we were happy to fund it. We are still happy to with the ISS.

Last time I was in southern Cali it already looked like Mexico. I just didn't know the US would behave like it too.

    I pray it doesn't.

Hopefully you guys crawl out of this mess and get your house in order and continue investment in areas such as spaceflight.

That, or hopefully private corporations can step up.

There are all sorts of innovative private companies with projects on the board. Some are even in testing. I'm not sure how that will all pan out but it will be interesting to see who will finally step up to fill the void.
