The Conservative government decided to shut down a panel responsible for vetting documents on the handling and treatment of Afghan detainees, a newly released letter indicates.
In addition, the June 2010 memorandum of understanding governing the panel and committee work says the agreement "survives a dissolution of Parliament" provided that the government and opposition parties opt to renew it.
Iacobucci declined to comment.
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Wednesday upon release of the records that the review was done.
"The process is over," he told reporters.
Andrew MacDougall, a spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office, said Thursday the opposition parties shut down the document review when they defeated the government in late March.
More lies about lies. If our government wont investigate how and why it ignored abuse complaints, someone else will.
Well the Conservatives did extremely well in pulling the wool over the eyes of the Canadian public giving the Cons a majority. They were able to run the string on the contempt of Parliament charges until after the election. Sure isn't the best way to start the next 4-5 years as a majority government.

"Guy_Fawkes" said Do you really want to know the answer?
I think we already do. The Conservative government ignored detainee abuse reports from the military, hoping to blame the previous Liberal government for the problems with the detainee agreement.
"Guy_Fawkes" said So you want to find out to stick it to the Conservatives? Or stop, what you believe, the conservative plan to blame the Liberals?
I only ask because you dont seem to have an interest in human rights, only politics.
I don't have an interest in human rights? It upsets me that our government plays political games with human rights. If they had nothing to hide, they wouldn't be so adamant about sweeping this under the rug.
I was just pointing out that although you are 'upset' your main goal is political, you want to stick it to the cons. While I can understand that, I dont think this is a partisan issue at all and shouldnt be treated like one, this is really is a matter of national security. We cant declassify military records when the opposition wants to make something a political issue. If it turns out like you expect (I dont think for a second it ever will) and it turns out that some prisons were tortured under the knowledge of members of the government, nothing will happen. Sure some scape goat/s will be appointed, a new more complicated process of prisoner exchange with ample amounts of red tape maybe even a 3rd party/location will be selected to hold Canadian prisoners. In the end however, nothing more will change, Harper will still be in power, people who vote Con will vote Con, Libs will vote Lib ect.
Politicians in general have no shame, until the camera is on them. The whole issue has turned into a finger pointing match, when this is an issue that shouldnt have seen the light of day. Not because it should be covered up, rather its a matter of general secrecy in regards to military procedure. The CF is not a malevolent force, if there was proof of torture I am positive something would have been done. The investigation is something the public does not need to know, they know the result and that's all they need to know.

Well that's your opinion. I care about people who are suffering, and I care about Canada's reputation for being peaceful and just. Harper is the antithesis of those things. There are reasons I dislike Harper more than I have any other Conservative leader. These Conservatives are something new and much more dangerous than the previous ones.
Curt. You seem to be off tack a bit. I agree with GF. You can't trust politicians from any side. You can trust the CF.
As for Canada having a reputation for being peaceful and just?
Come on, "Hey, your a Canadian? You guys are peaceful and just."
Mmmmmm. Really?
I think you are letting your personal dislike of Harper and Tories cloud your judgement. All politicians are wankers. Some are just bigger wankers than others.
I voted Tory because they are the least shit of a shite bunch (IMHO anyway).
You really think that the Libs and NDP are paragons of virtue that will lead us out of the CPC abyss?
"Curtman" said There is evidence they ignored complaints from the military. They were responsible for overseeing the agreement, and they did not.
You don't think Canada has a reputation for being peaceful in the world? Things have changed a lot in 5 years, but not that much.
Where did you find this evidence, the only thing I have seen is a lower level bureaucrat heard rumor that some prisoners were tortured after they were handed over. He asked the CF about it, and he was told the issue had been handled, the bureaucrat pressed the issue wanting to know specifics. He was shut out (rightly so since he did not need to know) and made a stink about it, the opposition got hold of the issue and the whole thing has snowballed.
If you have some proof of a Conservative conspiracy I would be glad to see it.
Secret documents flag Tory spin on conditions in Afghan jails
“Cumulatively, the documents leave one with the impression of (a) flawed Afghan judicial system that fall (sic) well below UN standards,” reads the memo, written by an adviser with the Afghanistan Task Force. “In addition, the assembled material may seem to suggest that Government of Canada messaging on the detainee issues for the last 12 months has been out of sync with reporting from the field.”
