Indeed. Glad the crew made it out OK.
A sad loss to history of an item that can never be replaced. Given the rarity of almost all World War Two equipment, they should really consider permanently grounding almost all of them just to avoid the risk of losing any more.

I had two Mitchell Bombers (converted to water bombers) fly low over my head. The look and sound was so stupendous I damned near fell over. They are such beautiful aircraft.
I believe one of these, particular aircraft, was lost and the other may have been grounded in the intervening years.
On the one hand these machines should be preserved, but on the other, they are so beautiful flying, you want to see them up there forever.
And this was just two B25 Mitchels, I can't imagine what a B17, or a Lancaster would look and sound like that low.

Fricken amazing. Lancasters just have a roar that is unlike anything else.

I've been on the ground when a Lanc has made a low pass a few times. Once at Farnbourgh, once in Hamilton and the last time was right over my house...which I think I have a picture or two of in my CKA photo album. It's like thunder and dark sky passing by.

It truly is. Last year at the Abbotsford Airshow there was a Lancaster. It was beautiful sight to see and a symphonic joy to hear.
I don't understand why it had to fly. Restore it and put in the museum, if you want to fly make the same new one and fly till your breakfast won't cover 3 hectare.
Part of it is the mystique of flying an aircraft that took part in The War as opposed to a replica. I paid darn good money just for the privilege of going for a ride in that particular aircraft.
