Activision knows it's more fun to blast on-screen enemies into oblivion with friends, so this fall it's launching an online service for its “Call of Duty” games that's part Facebook, part player matchmaker and part organized sports.
Nope. I like the COD series, but I will only pay one time for access to a game. I can see many more people doing the same, so in effect there will be two different games, one for 'subscribers' and one for regular players. Their greed will eventually kill the franchise.

Totally agree! I'm paying one time only. First they start off with a dollar/month then $5/month will become the norm. Not only that but you pay out a bunch of money and the game is crap. I still play COD5 because I don't like Black OPs. I played BO all the way through the single player and have only played online for a few hours. I have gaming chums that play but I just don't care for it. To think that I would have to pay extra to find that out would piss me off.
The whole online thing bothers me for gaming, it's a good idea but companies are focusing more on their online play/extras than they are on the actual game. Myself with my limited play time have no desire to spend the time online getting my but kicked and listenting to a bunch of 15 year olds that do nothing but play these games all day, decry you as a noob every time you do something they don't agree with and swear and make a bunch of noise in the background. I pine for the days when the campaign/story mode was the meat of the title and the online was for those that flew through the game and wanted to play more, call me old school, the only game I play online is NHL 10 and I only do it with a few buddies when we can't actually get together to play.
They need to install a voting system, like the Socom series. It was satisfying hearing some loser whine on the mic and then be abrubtly cut off when he got voted out. Give the players more control, especially if they're going to try adding more costs. I'm like you, I only try and play with groups of friends.

I play BO almost nightly with a few friends. We started getting bored of it. (Some are level 15 already). So we did a couple nights with COD 4:MW and a couple with COD5:MW2. It was fun. Surprising that there are still 7000+ COD4 servers out there.
Like Sapper says, many might go to BF3 if they only let some content be accessed through a subscription. I'll probably get BF3 anyhow, as I enjoy BF2 and BFBC2.
This could work but they are catering to a very thin segment of the hardcore player base. I think they will pay on a monthy sub if they are given a superior gaming experience. We are talking GPL league players here. For the rank and file I think this isn't going to fly. I wish them luck.
The soapbox did a good rant on this:
What is good for buisness is good for gaming in the long run.

That's funny because I'm the total opposite.
When it comes to games like COD, I almost always only play online. I rarely play the campaign mode.
On the other hand, I've just gotten into Fallout New Vegas which has no online portion but I enjoy it just as much.
Battlefield 3 is the game most of us online gamers can't wait for. Battlefield 2 was awesome.

See I watched my neighbor for about 1/2 an hour the other day playing Black Ops online, I found it exteremly boooooring, he just kept killing, then dying and respawning, no progression, no story, just mindless killing, which is ok but I like my games for a story and good 1 player campaign, if I wanna have a deathmatch ect.... I'll plug in the old Goldeneye with 4 buddies.

Single player is the one with the story. Zombie mode is the mindless killing (and funny to boot).
Multiplayer mode with objective based goals (capture the flag, demolition), that isn't mindless. It requires planning and teamwork.
I love the multiplayer because it's different all the time and you play with people from all over the world. I'm not a fan of the 15 year olds running and gunning and yapping either. That's why I play a none Modded Tach server nearly exclusively. It's called the BK-Polite and Friendly server and is well Admin'd so the runners and foul mouthed kids are kicked right away. Think I'm rank #2 overall on that server too. I've played their B/O server too but even they come back to the COD5 server from time to time.

Activision already beat this to it. They already messed up the cod franchise. Atleast they should have. I stopped paying interest to them after CoD5. There game they released shortly after MW that was a exactly copy of MW in game-play and every aspect. The only thing they changed was they reskinned the game to look WW2 and charged you for this. Than there next games they took away dedicated servers and prioritized console development which always messed over the PC version. Why people still buy these games is beyond me. Somebody got me Black Ops for christmas which is the only reason I have it. I'd never buy a Call of Duty game again, Battlefield series though I am looking forward to.

Suggestions for you would be Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. Both great games focusing exactly on that. Amazing storyline, great single-player campaign. They are pretty cheap now too.

Those are definately my type of games, already going on Dragon Age, haven't got mass effect 2 yet but it's on the list as I loved the first one, for online play I'll stick to the sports/racing titles

Agree. XBL had a preview video for this and I can't say I'm impressed. I'll wait and see of course, but as long as subscriber don't get an enhanced gaming experience I'll pass.
It also look a lot like what Bungie does with Halo Waypoint, which is free.
