It isnt hard to figure out that winning a $25-billion contract to build 20 ships for the Canadian navy would be fantastic news for any of the communities in the running for the 30-year project.
Im even willing to bet the Tory government in Ottawa kno
quiet diplomacy would be more effective than creating a public spectacle in an attempt to pressure the federal government.

Since the Davie Shipyard is in this area, we have heard lots about 'em. Ridiculously unionized, they are probably the ones most likely to make the most noise. The union there has proven pointless and they need complete overhaul. They have received provincial funding for years and have done nothing.
So admittingly, sometimes the best way to go is in fact ''quiet diplomacy''. And the Federal Govt should go with the shipyard that represents the best value and not play politics or please regional journalists.
It'd be nice to see Canada reestablish its heavy and light manufacturing industries here in Canada, rather than relying on the cheapest bidder to provide products of dubious quality and safety....It'd be nice to see all Western nations do that. I remember the line from Armageddon where the cosmonaut was bitching about the shoddy space station. 'Russian components. American components....all built in Taiwan!'

And so it shall,
But manufacturing costs have to be considered. Eventhough it is locally manufactured, it has to stay within budget.
Perhaps the unions need to take some pay cuts and in return have some income stability. Making $40 an hour is great, but if you're only working 50% of the time, $30/hr brings home a bigger pay cheque if your job is year round.
The only thing about the Davie Shipyard, again, union has nothing but destroyed it. People sitting around all day, doing nothing and getting paid, must be nice.
Either way, there are talks about a foreign company taking over.
Still, no matter, Federal Govt should consider merits instead of playing politics. That means West Coast, East Coast or Saskatchewan yo !

Think you are right on the money here. I think the unions will get the hint after the shipyard has no work and is mothballed and all the work goes out west to private contactors. They are tone deaf because they think they are the big fish in the pond and do not think they can be easily replaced but they can only play that tune for so long. I have little hope they will smarten up and read the writing on the wall as they are so wrapped up in and only see what they want to see.
The unions should push for some sort of profit sharing arrangement with the owners. If a contract is juicy they get paid more, if all they can get are low profit contracts they take a pay cut. Too bad neither management nor unions get this sort of idea.

Unions manged to destroy the Shipyard in Collingwood, ON exactly this way. Now the area is being turned into condos.
Also, which ships are they proposing be built?
I'm guessing that Halifax is the "" pity favorite in the running.
Fixed for reality.

I don't know if that company is good, but in every case big money for Halifax region are good.
