That means Saturn will be especially bright, because it will be the closest to Earth it will get for 2011, making this an ideal time to take a gander at the gassy planet. During opposition, the lord of the rings rises in the east at sunset and sets in

Had the telescope set up to show the kids, but the rain/cloud-cover's putting the kibosh on that.

Haven't seen a clear sky in forever, so this too, will not be seen by me.

I thought you'd be used to grey cloudy days, having grown up in north western Europe

Yeah, but that doesn't mean I like it.
In my defense, this Winter has been ridiculously grey.

We had one 'clear' day here in the last 3 months... I burned. Cloudy is fine by me.

Precipitation almost every day (either snow or rain), not able to see the top of the mountains... It is pretty depressing. Since October-ish...

Usually, we reach -20 day temps and full sun for a couple of weeks. Didn't have that this year...

It's not a one night event, just that last night was the closest and brightest this decade.

    I couldn't see it either.

A very misleading title, as all the inner planets along with Jupiter and Saturn are all visible to the naked eye if they are "up". Mercury, due close to it's close proximity to the Sun is only visible very close to the horizon at dusk and dawn. Venus, the "Morning" or "Evening" star is visible in the western sky at dusk or the eastern sky near dawn and is often the brightest "star" in the sky, being visible even in broad daylight. Mars is somewhat harder to see, but if one knows where to look the red planet is easily discernable on a clear night. Saturn and Jupiter are often some of the brightest objects in the sky at night, while the rings of Saturn are not readily visible to the naked eye the 4 Galilean moons of Jupiter are quite easy to see, if they are "up".
