Pools of highly radioactive water at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant Sunday hindered efforts to stop a toxic radiation leak and repair vital cooling systems so its damaged reactors can be safely shut down.

    The systems to cool the pools that are storing the spent fuel rods, some of which contain plutonium-tainted MOX, were also knocked out at the three units and at reactor No. 4, which had been shut down for maintenance before the quake. All of its fuel rods were being stored in the pool for the maintenance work.


    That is a very odd way to describe MOX fuel. The plutonium isn't an impurity that "taints" the uranium.
