This isn't a suspension for a hit to the head, it's a suspension for Matt Cooke being to stupid to read, listen or comprehend what just went on at the GM's meetings in Florida. 8O

This guys is a cheap shot artist who's gotten away with this crap for years and now it's time to pay the piper. The only thing better than a suspension and the resulting loss in pay, would have been having some goon beat the living crap out of him, but hey protecting players isn't allowed in Buttmans new NHL.

BTW does anyonelse find it ironic that he's the Assistant Captain on an a team that the owner is always screaming about players getting injured from dirty shots.

Maybe Mario should STFU so he doesn't keep comming off looking like a hypocrite.

I have to agree...Cooke did his hit with intent to injure, I don't believe Chara's was.

The Penguins organization has been outspoken about the need to clean up the sport and took the unprecedented step of applauding a decision against one of their own players.

“The suspension is warranted because that's exactly the kind of hit we're trying to get out of the game,” Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero said in a statement. “Head shots have no place in hockey. We've told Matt in no uncertain terms that this kind of action on the ice is unacceptable and cannot happen.

“Head shots must be dealt with severely, and the Pittsburgh Penguins support the NHL in sending this very strong message.”

Hopefully it's a good advance signal from the Pens that come summertime Cooke will be looking for a new home. If not then I'll have no problem at all in calling Mario Lemieux a total hypocrit.

Well played NHL, though I would of rather seen him shut down for the season, not just till end of first round.
Personally I think this guy has waived his right to play in the NHL.

As for the Chara hit, you guys are dillusional comparing what Cooke does to that.

When was this statement written? Oh yeah right after the NHL suspended Cooke for his latest bullshit hit. Unlike Cooke, I guess the team finally paid attention to what was being said at the GM meetings in Florida this year.

This guy's had so many freakin suspensions that he's got his own Parking Stall at NHL headquarters and not once did I hear Lemieux or Bylsma say one freakin word about him, illegal hits or cheap shots till Crosby got hurt and Cooke lost it again.

If they're supposedly supporting punishments for illegal hits they should have spoken up one hell of alot sooner and they should have cut that lunatic Cooke loose years ago.

Hell Cooke is even admitting he's got a problem and if he can see it why couldn't they.

Cooke told two Pittsburgh newspapers late Monday in Detroit that he “made a mistake” when he landed an elbow to the head of New York Rangers defenceman Ryan McDonagh.

“I realize and understand, more so now than ever, that I need to change,” Cooke said. “That’s what I wanted my message to be.”

    Bullshit.
