Veterans Affairs examined but rejected expanding a death benefit paid to families of soldiers killed in the line of duty, say documents filed in a human-rights case that alleges discrimination based on marital status.

Makes sense to only give it to people who were depending on that soldier for support. Maybe if parents can show they were doing so, they should get it too.

Says this is on top of an life insurance the soldier was carrying. Are there companies that will give you life insurance if you're in war? What are the premiums like?

Its an agency that is exclusive to the CF, all most all life insurance agencies wont cover soldiers in theater. The money is to help a family get out of the PMQ, let the spouse train for a new job ect. I dont see how parents or siblings could be put in the same position.

No, but limiting the benefit to married soldiers is discriminatory.

Personally, I am in favour of the decision, some benefits
should be limited to married people.

But there has been a big fight to destroy the institution as fast as possible.

This is not a benefit to married people. It's of no use to the dead soldiers who earned it.

It is a benefit to help the families of survivors with their finances after losing a breadwinner in battle. Frankly, in that regard it should not be seen a soldier's benefit, but a benefit to immediate survivors. A soldier with no immediate survivors frankly has no one to worry about and the government should not dedicate such survivor's benefits as honorariums.

No offense to anyone, but a dead soldiers' proper honorarium comes in the form of a gravestone and a poppy on Remembrance Day or Memorial Day.
