For the past 30 years governments have explained that, while they can no longer protect jobs through traditional forms of state intervention such as subsidies and tariffs, they can expand and reform education to maximise opportunity.

Kind of ironic. India was the richest country in the world before the British came and plundered it. Now they are getting it all back.

The author of the article is advocating for Mercantilism, which was a far worse system of global business. It subjugated the majority of the world's people under the boot of European self interest.

In Toronto here there are 100's of square miles of offices, warehouses and factories and god only knows that they do. As the emerging economies come on strong some will thrive and some will decline in the usual creative destructive operation of capitalism. The economy will remain strong although world competition may keep it from posting 1950's style productivity gains. There will be instability but the diversified economies of cities like Toronto should keep up.

I had no idea that you were a fan of historical revisionism.

Factual events aside you say nothing about the topic at hand. Seeing as your country will be one of the worst hit you should at least comment that your own companies are doing it to you.

Hey, we were doing fine with the Soviet Union being around.

Of course, you weren't, but that's not our problem.

More left wing nonsense from a left wing nonsense rag.

Bitch, bitch, bitch, but just wait for them to present their alternatives.

Given your foray into birther tin foiler nonsense I can see why historic facts elude you.

Its not so much that they are getting it back so much as we are sending much of our industry to them for momentary gain to long term pain.

In fact if Bart weren't off on a historic hissy he'd remember he made this point about industrial jobs moving to China a short while ago (made the additional point it's causing us to have cleaner air)

India was a country before the Brits got there? I thought it was a myriad of dozens of independent, despotic mini-monarchys?

I'm kinda shocked to find out it was some socio-economic super-power that was felled by the East India Company and a regiment of British Foot.

Yeah they were a country and a cultural superpower at the time. Your statement that they weren't reminds me of a comedic bit from Eddie Izzard. Can you place the reference?
