Britain's Daily Mail newspaper reports a 30-year-old man from Quebec was standing on the steps of the Reichstag with his right arm raised in Hitler's infamous salute as his girlfriend photographed him.

The newspaper says police arrived within seconds, handcuffed the man and took the memory card of the camera.

The Canadian tourist risks being formally charged with making a forbidden gesture, which could result in him being jailed for up to six months.

I wonder if there are other forbidden gestures, or if that is the only ungesturable gesture.

Can't think of any other gesture associated with Nazis, tho there's that weird palm forward, arm bent up thing they did too - or a least in the movies.

This is just like you can't wear swastikas or shout Heil Hitler. If the Germans didn't ban it, every time somebody gave a Nazi salute in German people would jump all over them for allowing it and that they are all still Nazis. Can't win, really.

    True that.

But still, what a stupid thing to do. Was his next stop going to be the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem?

    What a shithead.

Forbidden gesture? Six months in jail?

Anyone else think a simple fine is all this merits?

Most likely he will just get a fine. Or even just a good scare, depending on his attitude. I suspect the possibility of jail time is just to give police and prosecuters another weapon when they're dealing with actual neo-nazis.

Or how about thin-skinned idiots manning the fuck up and just dealing with it?

    P.S.:

Considering the history it's understandable that Germany be a little sensitive to this sort of thing.
