Physically fit men who are young, confident and travel in packs are the backcountry enthusiasts most likely to get caught in deadly avalanches, according to the work of a University of Calgary researcher.

I notice he din't look at snowmobilers, who are getting killed more often these days than the skiiers. I'm sure they're young men too, probably not as fit.

And what an obvious fiding. Being fit is a requisite for self-propelled travel, and being young helps there too. And the backcountry just doesn't attract the women nearly as much as the men.

Next up he'll study whether jackass stunts are mostly pulled by young men. Can't wait for the outcome of that one.

Study finds religious people most likely to visit places of worship.

Study also finds potheads more likely to reach for the cookie jar.

Are you sure you don't confuse them with stay-at-home moms with toddlers?

The other research into predicting avalanches looked interesting, but I really hope they didn't spend too much money on this study.

So it's a good thing to be a fat slob with no self-esteem? :?

Only if you don't want to die in an avalanche

We tried that, and the problem was that the fat guys always konked out way before they got high enough into the mountains to get to avalanche territory. Actually this study is right on. The best sacrificial victims were marathoners or young, hot shot, weight lifter types. They would go like blazes for a few hours, then totally crap out. So then, you know, you can suggest they just take it nice and slow and easy across that 40 degree slope ahead with the hanging cornice above it and the cliff face below. We'll hang back and keep and eye on them and see how they do.

I wonder why he doesn't equate intelligence into the findings, since that'd probably play a bigger part in the equation than confidence?

I personally know a crapload of people who are overly confident in their abilities despite the fact that they still can't figure out how to open a child proof cap.
