Said Suleman, who came to Canada as a refugee from Eritrea, said many fellow Muslims are successful and highly educated, and "it's time to step in and do our share.

Yes Indeed, This is something I was very glad to read.
This, by the way, is one of the type of things that actually does promote a better attitude toward Muslims. These are the kind of folks you want as your neighbours.
True, that being said, it suggests Muslims need to go out of their way and do this to promote themselves in order for people to have a better attitude towards them.
If that's the case, we need to see, for example, black people doing this so people don't buy into the "blacks are criminals" sterotypes so quickly. Followed by Catholics, Israelies, Baptists, Tamils, Italians, Irish... etc.

Which suggests that only "white Canadians" are so damned good they don't have to prove anything...
That said, good post

My point.
We are used to hearing about negatives about Islam to see good things going on is a rather pleasant change from what we often hear.
The Muslims doing this are the kind of people you would like to have as your neighbours.
I have met a lot of Canadians who don't need to prove anything white or otherwise.
My point is that seeing Muslims do good and noble things helps promote good feeling between Muslims and non-Muslims.

Fair enough, but my point stands as well. We need more blacks doing this type of thing so that we would like to have them as neighbors. I'd like to see east Indians doing it as well, and the Irish and the Italians. These groups have negative sterotypes, and having them throw me a Christmas dinner might make me think less of them as a group.

And whose fault is that ?

A lot of our news media. We have a lot of news organization here and unfortunatly the news that sells the best is "sensational" news (for lack of a better word). We hear all the bad things because it sells.
William Randolf Hurst made a fortune by printing a lot of "yellow Journalism" meaning the news had a "spin" to appeal to more base emotions than it should.
When you read a story like this that an Islamic parish or whatever an mosque community is called that punches a hole in the negative steriotype get to realize that people are basically good.
There needs to be more stories like that so that the negative steriotypes can fade away.
If a particular group does something very positive that this group is doing it speaks very well for them and shows us that judging people by the group is wrong because no group is monlithic, people are individuals.
If a Christian group were to do something similar for a Moslem holiday that would be something good too.
What is the problem with this? I like being around and reading about people and groups that do good things. What is wrong about this?
