I remember when a big oil spill in Vancouver Harbour. The company that spilled the oil was paying like $10K per oiled goose for treatment. Meanwhile the government biologists are in Stanley Park shaking up the eggs in the nests of the geese to cut down the population.

Really they should just open a season, make a little dough, give some bird hunters a good time. Win win.

Resident geese do not migrate, they are here year round. I know cause i get to hear them almost everyday.

A Canada goose is considered a migratory game bird no matter if they are a resident bird or one that actually migrates.

We come back to the balance of nature yet again. The geese have adapted to the urban reality and are thriving due to the availability of food for them and the lack of predation. They are safe, fat, with a high percentage of gosling survival rate and have no reason to leave. There are no where near the numbers of predators gleaning the rookeries, due to the fact that people don't particularly like coyotes and foxes making off with the odd neighborhood cat, so the geese reproduce at a very high rate. It boils down to the fact that we have altered the environment, one species has prospered in that environment and we now consider them pests because of it. As Brenda said, the arrogance of humans yet again.

There must be a way to open a season for them after the migrating birds have left. Have a February season or something. But I'd imagine that many of the "tree huggers" that are actually pissed about the goose population would freak out over a hunting season being opened for the geese. That type of hypocrisy wouldn't surprise me in the least.

They don't sound pissed, they sound concerned about how the geese are affecting the ecosystem. Those hypocritical bastards. Or, you're just living in your own little "everybody who doesn't think like me is a hypocrite" bubble.

But you're right, they need to stop thinking for themselves and do their science under the watchful eye of the CPC pc patrol. Really, why even bother training them. Just hire CPC hacks to do the research so it fits in with the Reformacon grand vision of reality.

Of course humans have altered the landscape, and in fact bear ultimate responsibility for what these geese are doing, since these geese were introduced to the island by humans. So not cull the humans, but a swift kick in the rear at times might be warranted.

I like goose, but the domesticated kind. Canada goos would probably be pretty tough eating. Maybe they can make dog food out of them or something.
