A minor hockey coach from Peterborough, Ont., who pulled his team from the ice after one of his players had a racial slur directed at him has been suspended for the rest of the season.
No no, you see that all wrong! Rules are rules, and whatever the reason may be, you DO NOT leave! That is DISRESPECTFUL and should be punished harder than the racist!
This is unfortunate. This is a case where there can be no winners. The coach was wrong for pulling his team over name-calling. The player was wrong for making the racial slur. It's just a mess. But the rules are clear and all coaches know the penalty for taking their team from the ice. Peterborough Minor Hockey had no choice in suspending him for the year. Where they erred was in the suspension to the player. He should have been permanently banned from minor hockey. Since the officials didn't hear the comment, they couldn't penalize the player for it, but they could have done a better job of handling the whole situation. Also, the fact that a midget game was being officiated by a 2-man crew is unacceptable. Bantam and up should always be a 3-man system. Peterborough Minor Hockey should know better than to use a 2-man system for midget hockey.
I have had one case in my career as an official where a coach wanted to pull his team. I told him if he did, he'd be suspended 1 year. I told him what I would do: send your trainer and assistant coach to the dressing room or lobby. Then tell me to fuck off. I'll give you a game misconduct and suspend the game because it can't continue without a coach on the bench. Coach gets a 3 game suspension for the game misconduct.
Sorry Lemmy but I have to disagree on a lifetime ban for a slur. In my mind that is way to steep for something that might have been said in the heat of the moment. A suspension of some sort is warranted, just not a lifetime.

Yeah, maybe so. Kids say all kinds of shit on the ice, often a lot worse than racial slurs.
Nice.
