The Defence Department is looking at whether it should buy U.S. President Barack Obama’s helicopter cast-offs as spare parts for the Canadian air force’s Cormorant search-and-rescue choppers.

Seems like this would only be a temporary stopgap measure, but at least it'll keep our birds flying more often.

Canada's cut corners and use scotch tape program. Canada is the world military salvation army. Please give us your hand me downs.

Considering the helicopters never entered service, I'd say they are some of the best hand me downs I've seen in a while.

This smacks of throwing good money after bad, but given the lack of willingness by either party to properly fund the CF, I guess we don't have a choice if we want them to keep operating.

Based on their performance and maintenance issues, we probably should never have bought the Cormorant in the first place. This is a perfect example of why having the military choose a platform isn't always the best process. They should have definitely have input in the process, but there should be other groups involved too.
