It was during a secret meeting in Paris this September that Canada realized there was little room for a compromise that would enable its Afghanistan-bound troops to keep using a covert military base near Dubai.
"Canadian_Mind" said Should go to the old gold souke in Dubai. Canadian flags and maple leafs everywhere, especially airforce and Navy.
Perhaps that is what they dislike. UAE is a fairly liberal Islamic nations and you can do a lot there that you can't even think of in some others but there are still some limits and ceratin thing they might not like seeing.
I can see why they wouldn't like the cultural intrusion, but at the same time, Dubai is trying to sell itself as a tourist destination to wealthy westerners, and they know they have to accept western culture to be succesful.
For instance, during Ramadan, they have secluded or otherwise private spaces where people who aren't muslim can eat during the day in public places (like the Dubai mall). You don't often see the west conforming to Muslims cultural needs as much as Dubai conforms to our cultural needs, while maintaining the integrity of their own culture... And they are more than happy to do so.
"RKC" said Good. We have no need for military bases overseas and the sooner Canada pulls all of its troops out of the middle east, the better off this country will be. I'm all for any move which will result in less money being wasted fighting a no win war and more money spent improving living conditions for Canadians right here at home.
The only concern I'd have is if by closing this base the Prime Minister plans on using it as a cheap excuse to blame any delays on pulling the troops out of Afghanistan on schedule.
I quite sure Harper wants the troops out of there as much as your average person does.

If Dubai wants to be a vacation resort for Westerners then cutting down on the religious restrictions are part and parcel of that. As for the West accomadating Islam, would you propose to ban the consumption of pork in the workplace to accomadate islam?
Canada has foreign bases outside Afghanistan and Canada?
Canada also has reciprocal privileges at numerous foreign bases about the world. Mostly the CF tends to visit US bases for the fact of common kit and spares.

Wait a sec....

If he were empowered by a majority government, I believe he'd have the troops committed to 4 more years of active combat missions.
You do know the history on Parliament's role in this mission?
As in the Chretien Liberals sent the army to Afghanistan and the Dion Liberals voted to extend the mission to 2011?
There will be no extension to mission if Parliament doesn’t agree to it. Majority or minority.Trying to make this into a partisan debate is puzzling.
On what do you base your 'belief' on? You not liking the Tories?

Close the base and bar all UAE flights to Canada.
Have a nice day.
