Leaders of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations want First Nations people to be exempt from the federal gun registry, saying the use of firearms for hunting is a basic treaty right that should not be limited in any way.
if it is a traditional right for the aboriginal peoples, then I think it would only make sense to acknowledge the traditional rights of the non aboriginal settlers that brought the first firearms to Canada.

Good luck with that. If the government kow tows and gives exemptions to natives - then I'll change my mind about the whole damned thing and call bullshit.
Mind, I'll think the government are fuckwits as well for pandering to the amazingly vocal minority...
If the natives don't want to register their guns, I guess they'll have to hunt with their traditional bow/arrows and tomahawks. I'm sure they won't have any issues with that, being so intent on preserving their heritage and all.
Good for them. By doing this they've really thrown a monkey wrench in the whole process.
Any party that backs a Native exemption and then upholds the gun registry for the rest of Canada, will look like they're giving the country away to the natives and have decided that a discriminatory policy against white Canada is perfectly acceptable.
But, if they don't back the Native exemption they'll be labeled racists, lose votes and have to watch the Canadian Government taken to court for violating Native Rights.
Either way it's a win win situation for abolishing the gun registry, traditional native hunting weapons not withstanding.
Although I oppose the registry, if we are going to keep it then the laws that govern it should apply equally to everyone regardless of ethnicity or a troubled history.

Check out S25 of our Charter. Aboriginal Canadians get an exemption on a lot of things.

S25 says that Aboriginals retain rights granted to them by treaties and the Royal Proclamation of October 7, 1763. I doubt there is a treaty that says firearms owned by Aboriginals are exempt from registration requirement.

Nope, but as you've seen in Caledonia, the govt isn't going to take on natives and pretty well any situation. Just give them some more money and another apology.
Sincerely,
Your Lesser Canadian servent

Of course it shouldn't, because everyone knows natives invented firearms.
