They are hand feeding them until hibernation, then the bears will have to fend for themselves next season. Animals that beg for food don't make good guards. The whole guard bear claim is obvious BS

Doubt it will work. If the bears even hibernate (many don't if there's a reliable food source) they will head straight for this property next spring expecting their handouts and teaching the cubs the same thing. When the handout don't come, things will get ugly, and the bears will likely be shot. The guy is a dickwad.
I say make Gordon Campbell shoot the bears, since his popularity can't get any lower anyway. But I'm sure there's lots of killers who call themselves hunters out there who would be glad to do the job.
Hand fed bears aren't going to make the best guard animals. They see humans as bringers of food, not as a threat.
I remember a book I read many years ago(can't remember the title) about bears that had been domesticated by humans colonizing a new world. The local fauna was highly aggressive and dogs couldn't stand against it, so bears were made larger and smarter, and then bonded to their human masters.

Yah but to a BC hippy looking to rip off a cash crop they would definately be a deterrent, not nessessarily agressive, appearances are enough.
