After a Sunday showdown between evangelists and an unwilling audience, residents of a Leslieville street have sworn to defend their neighbours against what some see as a deliberate targeting of a gay couple with fire-and-brimstone sermons.

Good on the neighbours, that's what all neighbours should be like.

This church needs to grow up and look around. Gays people are people just like anybody else.

Looks to me that they probably had no idea of the particular situation and were just doing what they've been doing for a long time. However, it's still fucking stupid.

Pray in Church or at Home.

I don't support anyone being harassed for any reason, and I don't support religious people harassing gay people. However the last line in your post seems out of place in modern society.

Is it not easier to bring gays to God if they are at least welcome to your church??

People can Pray anywhere, but not like these guys. That's just fucking stupid and they should know it.

If they are "praying" loud enough that the residents of the street could hear them, I'd call it disturbing the peace. Knocking on someone's door then telling them they are "living in sin" is harrassment.
I've seen outdoor prayer meetings before but they were usually done in an open area like a park, but it would seem this block was specifically targeted simply because of the number of gay ppl that live there. I'm not buying their "excuse".

It's not so much a hate crime it's more of their display of their ignorance and stupidity. They need to get their heads out of their ass, open their eyes and grow up.

this is an interesting situation, while personally if i heard a bunch of people praying and singing on my block i'd be the first person to fly out there and tell those people to take a flying leap. and with me would be the only book i have faith in, the beautiful Canadian Criminal Code(sorry Lord, the message is good, but man there is something wrong with that bible, something very wrong)Cause disturbance, breach of peace, and maybe a little mischief is what i'd be preaching. but i would stop short at calling the police, because, strangely enough it is offense to interrupt a religious meeting:

    176. (2) Every one who wilfully disturbs or interrupts
an assemblage of persons met for religious
worship or for a moral, social or benevolent
purpose is guilty of an offence punishable
    on summary conviction.

yeah, that's a strange one all right.

Hold a religious meeting in the middle of the street and see how long it takes the cops to disrupt it. Unless you're First Nations of course, but then they own the land and all.

Well the Charter trumps the CCC and I'm sure a good lawyer could find a rights / discrimination violation if the gay couple wanted.

Plus if they are disturbing the peace they are in violation of a CCC offense so can't be protected by 176 to avoid a violation of another CCC offense.

Plus if you want to get technical, standing in the middle of the street is a public safety issue which trumps 176. If you want to get more technical if they want to do this in the middle of the street I bet bi-laws state they need a permit of some kind.

Basically like Andy said, the police would likely break it up.

i completely agree with both of you, and if i were the one dispatched to this, your damn right i would get those people to leave right away, just found it interesting that there is actually something in the criminal code that deals with breaking up a religious gathering
