Well they did that, and now they are facing a demographic problem with an aging population. And, because people preferred boys, they have a cohort of at least 30 million men growing up who won't be able to find women and so are expected to cause lots of trouble.

Not surprising, given that China had only a handful of private (civilian) vehicles until the mid-1980s. The infrastructure is nowhere near what China needs, despite massive construction programs.

Thats not the half of what the one child policy is doing to China. The generation gap between parent and child is as staggering in china as the one between you and your great grandparents.

China has one of the world's fastest growing automobile markets, with sales of hundreds of thousands of cars every quarter and an annual growth rate around 5%, whereas Western countries are about 1.5%.

The problem is that their infrastructure development cannot keep up with the rapidly growing number of private cars and trucks.

So in other words, they drive on the sidewalks over there too?

There were 100M Americans when the automobile was let loose on America in 1920. How many Chinese are there now? 1.3B?
