My favourite line from that article was:

Forms for next year’s census will have to be printed shortly.

Well, I guess they won't be printed longly, will they?

    August news doldrums.

Come on. There's no way you can defend the scrapping the longform census. The census is a vital historical document. The census is the history of our people. They're fascinating and provide a wealth of understanding of our history. I'm proud to have produced the first electronic database of the 1871 Census of Canada when I was an MA student.

Shame on the Torries for even considering such a short-sighted move.

How can you defend it? An intrusive questionaire that only 20% of homes are stuck with. If you were to send the long questionaire to EVERY home I would have no problems. Do you honestly think that those persons getting the long form don't fuck with some of the questions. Apparently we have about 200,00 Jedis in Canada!

There are many errors with them, which is also of historiographical value.

Long or short. Please keep the government out of my personal life.

How many people in real life are interested in historical documents of which as 2Cdo says are only 20% correct.

I'm having a hard time finding a source on that 20k Jedi figure that's not the Western Standard or the PMO.

Stats Can does not have "Jedi" listed in their religions table for 2001, which is purportedly the source of the number. I don't know if Stats Can chose to ignore it on the grounds that it was silly, but it's not there.

If the long form hits 20% of housholds, that's a hell of a lot of people. Margin of error is 1/sqrt(sample size). So if 20% of households can be thought of as ~20% of population (now 34 000 000), that means the margin of error is 0.04%, 19 times in 20. That's utterly miniscule.

This scrapping of the census forms, gives the opposition parties something to sink their teeth into, both of them. What a bunch of horseshit.
