Isn't it interesting that there is a long list, yet no one seems to believe them ?

Maybe more concrete actions are needed.

And even more interesting that Germany doesnt suffer this stigma ?

Maybe if they'd have thrown in a few bucks the Koreans would have believed them.

Japan should take lessons from Canada when it comes to issuing apologies.

Apologize for everything, even things you had no control over. Don't forget to pay outrageous sums to the heirs of the oppressed, since, as we all know money is the only thing that can correct an injustice or make the oppressed's families feel like they're Canadian.

    Martin,
Germany does suffer this stigma because when Konrad Adenauer established the first post war German government made it a general principle to freely admit what was done and to make amends where it could. They did not try to hit their history, they were very open about it. It took a great deal of courage to do this.

The Germans are ashamed and embarrassed by their history and everybody knows it.
They haven't tried to hide it for decades like the Japanese. Israel and Germany get along fine these days. Don't dare wave a nazi symbol in Germany or your ass will wind up jail real fast that is if you don't get you head kicked in first.

The Japanese have argued "well we really weren't that bad", yes you were.

We officially apologize to those Korean subhumans for what we did. We promise to never do it again. Well, unless the opportunity arises. After all, we are the greatest people in the world. (They picked that last part up from their American conquerers.)

This would be a good game to play!

Ok, being half Irish and half English I want an apology from these people in this order.

The Irish, for the IRA terrorists etc and their atrocities during the 1960’s and on.

The English for invading Northern Ireland and killing those freedom fighters, the IRA from the 1960’s and on.

The Bloody Germans for everything after 1914 and before 1946.

The Bloody French for everything from 1066 to the present.

The English under Cromwell for the invasion of Ireland in 1649.

The Irish terrorists who killed English soldiers trying to bring peace to Eire in 1649.

The Normans for oppressing us free Anglo-Saxons in 1066.

The Anglo-Saxons for needlessly killing Normans rightfully claiming the English throne in 1066.

The Anglo Saxons for killing our Pict and Gaelic cousins.

The Pict’s and Gaels for killing the Anglo Saxons and Jutes.

The bloody Danes and other Vikings for killing everyone.

The Romans for killing the Ancient Britons and everyone else.

I’ve missed out a lot of people who should be apologising to me and giving me a cash settlement.......

Look again, Japan already paid Korea, the Korean government took the money to spend on public projects.

The big difference is how the countries dealt with the shame of their actions in WW2. The Germans apologized like crazy, gave Israel shitloads of cash and even today still give them military aid (for example, they built Israel's current batch of Dolphin class subs), and enacted laws to prevent something like that from ever happening again (de-Nazification).

The Japanese, on the other hand, largely deny that their actions in WW2 (Rape of Nanking, sexual slavery (AKA comfort women), treatment or POWs, Unit 731, and dozens of other monstrous acts of brutality were that bad at all. In fact, some maintain that Japan started the war with the US to 'liberate' Asian colonies from imperialist Western nations. Japanese nationalists today still preach about taking over Asia, use their wealth and power to coerce government officials and do their damnedest to make sure that none of the unspeakable acts of evil Japanese soldiers perpetrated during WW2 are in textbooks (conversely while making sure that the acts of horror that Japanese suffered - like the nukes dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki - are crimes against humanity), etc.

Additionally, every year, the Japanese PM makes at least one visit to Yasukuni, a shrine that holds the remains of several Class A war criminals. Could you imagine if German Chancellor's made a visit to a museum holding the partial remains of Hitler, Goering or any of the other monsters that ran the Third Reich?

That's why Japan suffers a 'stigma' and Germany doesn't.

South Korea is doing great! There biggest problem is letting their kids starve while they play MMO's.
