Good luck Rajni and Sanjeev. I hope you break out of the stone-age and into the modern world.

Several activist and aid agencies are working in India to eliminate caste discrimination. After the 2004 tsunami, some victims refused to stay in tents in makeshift relief camps alongside lower-caste families. And this month, at least 1,000 students belonging to upper castes in Uttar Pradesh switched schools so they wouldn't have to eat mid-day lunches prepared by cooks who were members of the Dalit, or “untouchable” caste.

Beating the caste system out of a society like this would be extremely difficult.

Honour killings are increasing here, and I noticed Muslims get most of the blame, but for this one, they're not at fault. India's caste system is quite frankly the oldest, ugliest and most heavily self perpetuating social system on the globe.

There have been a number of honor killings in BC involving Sikhs, including a bomb in an electric kettle. Sikhs don't have a caste system, nor do Muslims. I believe a bigger problem involving Hindus is killing the bride for not bringing in enough dowry. Usually done by the mother-in-law, usually by burning.

Punjab people are in there, they have castes too.

The article does a pretty decent job of explaining why honor killings happen in India, and how the caste system is intertwined with the Indian democracy.

India, is right down there with Africa, I know India is the investors darling, but let's be honest, India is backwards even for Asia.

Caste is an ongoing problem for Indians even when they move to Canada or the USA. I saw it at Intel with upper caste Indians pushing around lower caste and, much to their credit, it was the Lesbian-Gay-Bi-Transgendered employees group who fought to put an end to Intel's complicity with caste-based violations of civil rights. Outside of Intel, though, these problems certainly exist in the Indian communities in Canada and the USA.

Canada must toughen up its laws regarding immigrants and this kind of shit.. When they immigrate they should have to sign an agreement to leave this crap behind or no ticket in.. and if they commit these crimes ( and they do) then they are sentenced and deported no matter how long they have been here..
