Someone explain to me these 'sanctions'. What does it mean exactly and what does it do because I'm confused. I keep hearing about 'sanctions against Iran, N.Korea' but in reality, what is it doing? What is the difference between the continuous and never ending previous sanctions and new sanctions? Is sanctions a new word to talk tough but not do anything?

Among the measures, Canada will ban any new Canadian investments in Iran's energy sector and any exports that could in any way assist Iran's nuclear sector.

    They didn't do that before?????
Canadian financial institutions from purchasing any Iran debt.

    Purchasing a country's debt?

Well, I can explain some of the American sanctions. Iran, with all of its oil, has little domestic refining capabilities. That means little diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, etc, are produced in Iran.

So, the US is telling companies if you sell Iran gas, diesel, jet fuel, etc, you can't sell or operate in the United States. Not being allowed to operate in the United States would make a lot of MNCs think twice.

sanctions are away of doing nothing yet claiming you did all that you could to stop something. It's like having a bully threaten to beat you up, and then you telling him, if he goes through with it you'll stop talking to him and not be his friend.
