A couple of Dartmouth retailers are turning to public shame to fight shoplifting. Pictures of shoplifters taken from in-store surveillance cameras are being posted in the stores.

Who cares, its a great idea. I'll keep an eye open to see which stores did it.

    Insured? No.

Businesses can write off theft on their taxes but it's not even close to compensating for the cost of the losses.

Who also have the option of protecting themselves in whatever way they choose.

Would you rather none of the retailers did anything to combat shoplifting? That just drives prices up. It's about time retailers started doing something to deter these losers. It certainly won't eliminate the problem, but at least it's something.

it might do a multitude of things, one is before shoplifting, if you see a picture of someone else, they might think twice before hitting that store.

A dozen thefts in 2.5 years is what drove them to do this? Unless they are selling diamonds or gold buillion, what are they losing that a dozen thefts in more than 2 years is affecting them so badly? I've worked in stores where theft was a near daily occurrence, not a rarity as it is for these shops. And I'm not saying that that is okay, just noting it's a rather low level of shoplifting (most stores take theft into account when they set prices).

It's practically useless IMHO. Does anyone think some hopped up crackhead looking to steal something to sell to get his/her next fix will give a damn about their photo being displayed? Not likely. I applaud their attempt to deter shoplifters, but this is a waste of time. RFID tags, security scanners and plain clothes security are more effective at stopping shoplifting than this will be.

Not to argue but seems to be an inneffective way to deal with what in this case really is a minor ammount of theft when things like in boots post are already options.
Kinda like those signs at the grocery store "do not accept cheques form these people....", not gonna stop "these people" from passing cheques somewhere else.

I think in this case it might stop some mishevious kids from shoplifting, but some people can't help themselves and this won't deter them.

Local mechanic here puts the name of the NSF'ers on the marquee if they don't make good on their debt.

Driving down the highway, a small meat shop near home advertises outside on his billboard for all to see: Jack Robinson, PAY YOUR BILL! Sometimes there are 2 or 3 names on the billboard...he says it works!
